On Information Loss in Software

Ilya Sher — 20 minutes

What is common between empty "catch" clause and untagged AWS resource? Information that was once easily accessible was lost and now you need to work hard to recover or reproduce it.

“Information Loss” is a way to look at the world.

For the purposes of this talk “Information Loss” is the situation where some information is available and is easily accessible at some point in time but when it is needed later it is either not available or not easily accessible.

I will talk about various categories of information loss and give examples.

The intention is to help you to get the feeling and start looking at things from the information loss perspective. It will be easier for you to spot and therefore prevent information loss situations after this talk.
